Prior to European and American settlement, Central Florida was populated by several Native American tribes, including the Muscogee, or Creeks. In 1838, the U.S. Army established Fort Gatlin near Lake Gatlin, which is located in the southern part of what is now the city of Orlando. There is some dispute over how Orlando got its name—some say it came from a U.S. soldier who fell during the Second Seminole War, others say the city was named after a wealthy landowner, and still others say it was named after the character Orlando from Shakespeare's As You Like It.

The Orlando area became the center of the Florida citrus industry during the late 19 ^th century. Orlando continued to thrive into the early 20 ^th century, when it experienced increased tourism and a substantial housing boom. Walt Disney World opened in 1971, cementing Orlando as one of the world's greatest tourist destinations. Today, Orlando is home to about 250,000 people, and the city sees more than 50 million visitors every year.
